A police officer is reported to have been seriously assaulted by a prisoner during an interrogation at a prison facility in Helsinki on Thursday.
 
The police officer was seriously injured and taken to hospital.
 
Since the police officer was in official duty at the time of the incident, the case is being investigated as attempted murder.
 
The interrogating officer is a sergeant at the Helsinki Police Department and was interrogating a 35-year-old man who is serving time in prison for traffic crime but also had violent criminal background.
 
The man unexpectedly attacked the police officer in the middle of the interrogation. 
 
He managed to badly injure the police officer before the prison staff came to the aid of the policeman and stopped the battering.
 
The investigation of the case has been referred to the National Bureau of Investigation which cooperates with the Helsinki Police Department.
