Sat, 06 Feb, 2016 12:08:19 AM FTimes – STT Report, Feb 6 File Photo – Lehtikuva. The decision on the possible closure of several police stations is expected this spring, announced the Ministry of the Interior.
The National Police Board proposed closing approximately 15 police stations and other police premises in different parts of the country.
The aim is to shrink the police station network and reduce office costs.
According to the Ministry, the police also wishes to curb the decline in the number of policemen by transferring funds “from walls into action.”
“The police operational capability will not be adversely affected by the reforms,” the Minister of the Interior commented in a statement.
According to the National Police Board, the proposed police station closures would save more than euro one million annually.
A decision on possible closures will be made after consultations in March. Both municipalities and regional coordination groups will be consulted.
There are currently 119 police stations in Finland.
