The criminal proceeding against former Helsinki Drug Unit police chief Jari Aarnio for drug dealing and abuse of official position began on Monday with the repeal of the travel ban imposed on him.

The prosecution did not oppose the annulment of the ban.

Information on Aarnio’s drug and official abuse crimes were relayed via a video link of an Estonian witness who claimed that Aarnio had been involved in organised crime activities in the early 1990s.

The Estonian man said he gave Aarnio a number of cash envelopes in the early 1990s. The last money envelope changed hands probably in 2002.

“He walked to a parking lot, walked across me, (and he) took the envelope. I never looked what was inside the envelopes,” the Estonian said.

Prosecutors are demanding 13 years for Aarnio for aggravated drug trafficking and abuse of official position.

Aarnio has denied all charges.
