President Sauli Niinistö on Wednesday said it must be kept in mind that it was Finland’s desire to get the border restriction agreement made with Russia.

Niinistö, however, admitted that the agreement was not fully in line with what Finland wanted, but that does not detract from the fact that the agreement is necessary.

He denied that Finland bowed to Russia in respect to the Russian-Finnish border agreement.

The president was on a visit to Lapland when he made the remarks.

According to Niinistö, European Union countries hope that Finland will resolve the border issue with Russia bilaterally.

He said the agreement was discussed beforehand and afterward with the EU countries, but none of them had raised any issue.

The president visited the Raja-Jooseppi border-crossing point with Russia on Wednesday where he met with the Lapland Border Guard.

Cross-border traffic restrictions came into force at the two northern border-crossing points of Raja-Jooseppi and Salla on Sunday.

Now, only citizens of Finland, Russia and Belarus and their accompanying family members may pass through the borders.

The border policy was negotiated as Finland attempted to stop entry of asylum seekers across its eastern borders.
