The majority of asylum seekers who had claimed to be minor but underwent age-assessment tests have turned out to be adults, according to a report run by the Finnish language daily Kaleva.

Seventy per cent of the asylum seekers examined in 2015 were found to be adults, forensic dentist Vivian Visnapuu told the daily.

According to Visnapuu, the proportion of examined persons who turn out to be adults has risen.

Age determination is carried out, if the authorities suspect the claim of an asylum seeker to be a minor in age.

The age determines, among other things, what kind of services is offered to an asylum seeker.

This year, about a hundred age-determination examinations have been conducted, while last year 156 such tests were carried out.

The test is conducted by examining the teeth and their X-ray images. As a principle, the test is only done to unaccompanied minors.

A total of 3,024 unaccompanied underage asylum seekers arrived in the country. By the end of March this year, 177 unaccompanied asylum seekers have come to Finland.
