The accident took place when a passenger car collided head on with a truck.
The driver of the car was killed in the accident. The victim was 35 years old, said the Eastern Finland police.
The motorist was driving the car along National Road 5 towards Iisalmi when for unknown reason the car drifted towards the oncoming lane.
The truck driver was slightly injured when he was thrown through the windshield to the road following the impact.
The passenger car caught fire after the impact. There were no other persons travelling in the car.
The clearance work at the scene of the accident, which is about 20 kilometres north of Iisalmi, had continued until late in the afternoon.
