The council of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) began in Lappeenranta on Friday with the view to elect the party leadership.

The biennial election will be held on Saturday where the party delegates will elect their Chair-person for the next two-year term during the council.

Incumbent Chairman of the party and Finance Minister Alexander Stubb, Interior Minister Petteri Orpo and party leader Elina Lepomäki are contesting for the post of party Chief.

Many of Kokoomus delegates were still on Friday weighing whether Stubb would get a second chance or is it time to replace him with Petteri Orpo or with Elina Lepomäki.

Interior Minister Orpo has been a strong candidate during the campaign for the Chair leaving others challengers behind.

Hardly anyone guessed during part´s last congress in 2014 that the position of Alexander Stubb could be at stake within a span of only two years.

The candidates on Friday met the district delegates where they revealed their goals.

“We still have to make 18 presentations to the districts and the unions today (Friday) and tomor-row. All will be working so hard in the next hours,” Stubb said.

As a tradition, the campaign was to continue until late Friday evening and night.

About 800 delegates will elect a new chairperson during the elections which begins on Satur-day morning.
