Former chairman of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) Alexander Stubb on Wednesday said he had turned down an offer to be a minister.

Following the decision, Stubb will continue as a lawmaker.

The party’s new chairman, Petteri Orpo had offered him the portfolio of foreign trade, but he refused the offer, because he wishes to give Orpo the chance to assemble his own ministerial team, Stubb told a press conference.

Stubb said he believes being an MP is the best option for him, adding that he does not have any other plan.

“I feel both relieved and liberated,” Stubb said.

He does not have any far-reaching plans. He did not take a position on, among other things, whether he would stand as a candidate in the parliamentary elections.

In the summer, he plans to relax and enjoy a vacation with his family.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Juha Sipilä expressed appreciation towards Stubb for giving space to the new Kokoomus party chairman.

Sipilä said he hopes that all politicians would know how to spend their time like Stubb.

According to Sipilä, Stubb told him even before the party congress that he would probably opt out of ministerial duties, should he step down as the leader of the party.

Speaking in parliament, Orpo said he was satisfied with the choice Stubb made.

“I would have been willing to give him a ministerial position, but he chose this path himself.”

Orpo said he had wanted first to know Stubb’s wishes.
