FTimes- STT Report, July 16

Women voted in a more balanced way for both male and female candidates in the previous parliamentary elections, said a research on parliamentary elections.

The research found that men voted more for the male candidates.

The emphasis on the candidate's gender is, however, on the wane, the researchers revealed.

Still a third of the respondents in the 2003 parliamentary election survey considered the gender of the candidate essential. The figure, however, dropped to a fifth in the 2015 elections.

The research found that women placed more emphasis on the gender of the candidate than men.

More than one in four women felt that gender influenced the voting decision while the corresponding for the men was only about one in ten.
