A parachute jumper on Sunday failed to reach the ground at Oulunsalo in North Ostrobothnia, Skydive Oulu Association sources said.

The woman jumper in her first jump with the Skydive Oulu Association went past the landing area and was snagged by trees, leaving her hanging about eight metres off the ground.

“This was a jump from one kilometre up, where the parachute opens automatically after leaving the airplane. Controlling the chute is the jumper’s responsibility. It may be that she did not direct herself far enough toward the landing area,” said the association’s Chairman Jarkko Orava.

The rescue department rushed to the spot and fire fighters climbed the adjacent trees and cut the jumper from the tangled cords.

The jumper was not injured due to her protective gear.
