Processing of social assistance may see a hectic end of this year, when the support system moves from the municipalities to the national social insurance institution Kela, reported the Finnish language newspaper consortium Lännen Media.

According to the Lännen Media, a portion of municipal assistance employees will seek out new employment, and it is possible that municipalities will have less staff at the end of the year to handle applications.

In 2015, around 800 people were employed with the title of municipal benefits officer. Kela will be hiring, according to the Lännen Media, around 300-350 new employees for processing municipal benefits.

National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) researcher Jouko Karjalainen said the change will result in more social assistance applicants and beneficiaries and the bureaucracy for processing the applications will be reduced.

According to THL statistics, 7.2 per cent of the population received social support in 2014.
