The population of Helsinki will exceed 700,000 in 2028, predicted the City of Helsinki Information Centre.

According to the estimate, the city’s population will grow by about 6,500 to 7,500 people annually until 2020, after which the pace will slow down.

The city’s net emigration to neighbouring municipalities is forecasted to increase once again, due to new traffic routes.

The new roads also increase housing facilities in the capital area.

Also, age demographics are changing. The number and percentage of pensioners in the capital city is projected to increase. The number of children is also increasing, but at a more moderate pace.

Growth in the number of working-age population is forecast to slow down from the high level of recent years. However, immigration will continue to sustain growth.

In January of this year, about 628,000 people lived in Helsinki.
