Hundreds of asylum seekers on Thursday staged a demonstration in front of the Finnish Immigration Service main office in Helsinki, slamming the service for taking too tough a stance on asylum decisions.
“We came to Finland, because we believed that human rights are instituted here. We were wrong, (human rights) are not relayed,” said Serwan Alwindi, one of the demonstrators.
The placards held by the protestors read, “Afghanistan is safe for terrorists” and “We demand a fair asylum process.”
The Immigration Service has evaluated the security situation in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia to have improved now. It is, therefore, harder for asylum seekers arriving from these countries to get asylum.
The majority of pending asylum decisions concern people from these three countries.
