A total of 12,971 new motor vehicles, of which 8,776 were automobiles, were registered in the last month, according to the data of the Vehicular and Driver Data Register of the Finnish Transport Safety Agency.

The data revealed by Statistics Finland also shows that first registrations decreased by 6.8 per cent from the corresponding month of the previous year.

In August, the number of new passenger cars registered was 7,729, nearly 2.4 per cent up from the corresponding month of the year before.

The share of new diesel-driven passenger cars was 34.7 per cent. The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Åland Islands.

In the January to August period of 2013, a total of 122,453 vehicles were first registered. Compared to the year before, there was a decrease of 12.8 per cent. The number of passenger cars first registered in the January to August period was 72,738, which is 10.1 per cent down from the year before.

The most common passenger car makes first registered in the January to August period were Volkswagen, Toyota and Ford.
