Photo – Str / Lehtikuva. The world’s first-ever coding championship was won by the Need for C team from Poland. The Finnish team Resocar came in third place.
The first-ever coding championship in Helsinki attracted a huge crowd of spectators. Eight teams from Brazil, Slovakia, Poland, Russia and Finland participated in the inaugural event.
The teams were tasked with creating an intelligence programme to race a virtual car while the audience followed the competition from big screens behind the competitors.
More than 4,000 coders from 90 countries participated in an online qualification in March.
Ville Valtonen, one of the organisers of the Hello World Open said the number of the participants took the organisers by surprise but in a pleasant way.
The world championship is expected to attract interest in coding as well increase its understanding.
“We want to create role models from the coders. We have reached our goal, if at the end of the competition one child is asked what he wants to become when he grows and the answer is a coder,” said Valtonen.
