Energy company Pohjolan Voima has warned that the Finnish electricity system may face a major problem due to shutting down of high-power generating plants due to unprofitably.“At worst, Finland is threatened by a severe power shortage and the Finland energy security being in danger,” said Pohjolan Voima President and CEO Lauri Virkkunen. Virkkunen said high-power generating plants are needed because of the extreme cold weather and as large power plants are out of use. Pohjolan Voima has been closing down unprofitable power plants. In May the company announced that the natural gas-fired Mussalo power plant was closed down in 2003 due to profitability issues with the decision taken to dismantle the power plant by the end of 2015. The company is closing down power plants located in Vaasa and Kristiinankaupunki next year. It is also considering shutting down another power plant in Kristiinankaupunki as well as one in Pori.
