Alcoholic beverage retailers Alko will have to compensate their employees for breach of extra working hours’ obligation.
According to the Labour Court, part-time workers at an Alko outlet in Nokia did not get appropriate extra hours when new workers were hired.
The decision by the court is the first extra hours ruling of its kind.
The private-sector trade union Service United-PAM emphasised the significance of the ruling.
“I see this as a confirmation of part-time workers’ rights,” said Sirpa Leppäkangas, a working hour and payroll affairs expert from PAM.
Following the ruling, Alko will have to compensate the workers 3,000 euros in fines.
In addition, Alko and the Finnish Commerce Federation will have to compensate the union representing the employees 12,000 euros in legal costs.
