The December 6 reception, usually held in the presidential palace, will take place this year in Tampere as the palace is scheduled to undergo a renovation at that time.

The cities of Turku and Jyväskylä had also expressed their interest to host the prestigious event but eventually lost the honour to Tampere. The president’s office said the programme details would be disclosed in the autumn.
Taking the reception out of the capital is not unprecedented. It was held outside Helsinki twice before.

Photo Lehtikuva The programme was first shifted to Tampere in 1972 and then to the Finlandia Hall in 1981, when the presidential palace was under construction. In 1982, physical ailments compelled the then president, Urho Kekkonen, to delegate the task of hosting the presidential Independence Day celebrations to the then deputy prime minister.
