President Sauli Niinistö will attend the meeting of the leaders of Nordic countries with US President Barack Obama scheduled for September 4 in Stockholm.

Swedish authorities have already sent the invitation to the Finnish president to attend the meeting, said sources at the president’s office.

The Finnish authorities had to wait for the invitation till Thursday as it was not clear whether the president or the prime minister would represent Finland at this meeting.

But the issue has been settled when Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen said the president should represent the country in the meeting to hold talks with the USA president, prime minister’s office sources said.

The US president on August 7 cancelled abruptly a meeting with the Russian President Vladimir Putin scheduled for early September in Moscow but is expected to participate in the G-20 meeting to be held in St Petersburg.

Obama will travel to St Petersburg after a stay-over in Sweden where he will hold a meeting with the leaders of the Nordic Countries, reports BNS, a the Baltic news agency.

A number of international media report that the cancellation of the Obama-Putin meeting is believed to be made in response to Russia’s decision to grant asylum to fugitive US spy-agency contractor Edward Snowden.

The upcoming visit of Obama has generated much interest among people following repeated dissatisfaction of the US authorities expressed at Russia for granting asylum to Snowden.

Obama will visit Sweden on September 4 on his way to St Petersburg before the G-20 countries meeting scheduled for September 5.

A meeting between Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and Obama on global political and economic development issues from the Swedish point of view is also expected to be held.

The US president is expected to hold talks with other Nordic leaders in Sweden at that time.
