Speaking at the industrial seminar in Helsinki, Niinistö said the public sector accounted for nearly 60% of the GDP. In the president’s opinion, it is the highest in the world.
He said the state’s programmes to stimulate productivity have not generated the desired results even though the number of employees had been reduced.
“It appears that the cut down has been pointed to the level that directly serves the public,” he said proposing that cuts should not focus on the lower level alone and should be done the other way.
The president also criticised the position of the public sector in leading the way for wage development.
The seminar organised by Minister for Economic Affairs Jan Vapaavuori, discussed ways of creating more opportunities for industrial growth.
