The government weathered a vote of confidence in parliament on Friday by securing 92 votes against 80.

Some 27 member of parliaments were however absent during the process.

The confidence motion was placed following the resignation of Vasemistoliito (Left Alliance), which has 12 seats in the 200-member parliament.

The Left Alliance decided to quit the government late March after opposing a spending cut package agreed by five other parties of the coalition government.

The opposition parties Perususomalaiset (Finns Party), Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) and the Vasemistoliito (Left Alliance) had sought interpellation earlier in parliament on the government decision to cut child benefits during the March spending limit talks.

The opposition parties, during Thursday's interpellation, criticised the government on its family policy.

The government defended its decision to embark on the cuts, maintaining that all these had to be carried out for the economy's benefit.
