Petteri Orpo, chairman of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) has announced that he is not in the race to succeed Jyrki Katainen as the next party chairperson.
Orpo told the Turun Sanomat, a Finnish language newspaper on Wednesday morning that he wants to spend more time with his family.
Orpo who has two children pointed out that this would not be possible if he became the prime minister.
Later, in a briefing, Orpo said he still would have managed the prime minister's tasks.
He, however, does not have any ministerial experience, which is seen as his greatest shortcoming.
Jan Vapaavuori, Minister of Economic Affairs is the only one so far who has publicly announced his aspiration to become the next chairperson of the National Coalition Party.
The party is set to elect its new chairperson in June at a convention in Lahti.
Earlier, Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, also chief of Kokoomus announced that he will quit the party chair as well as the prime ministerial office after the next council of the party scheduled for this summer.
