Blueberry bloom has proceeded reasonably well and picking is expected to begin in late July, according to an evaluation of Kauko Salo, a senior researcher from the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla).
The blueberry harvest was threatened as a lack of snow destroyed blueberry twigs around the country.
About one-fifth of the blueberry twigs were destroyed, according to Salo’s assessment.
According to Salo, this year’s harvest may be more scattered than in previous years.
Already blueberries that are not fully ripe can be seen in forests in the southern and central parts of the county.
The July weather is, however, of great importance to the success of harvest. Suitable rain is crucial for a good harvest, as blueberry thrives on moist and cool summer weather.
