Minister of Interior Päivi Räsänen has refuted a media report that the country may be exploring the possibility of becoming more stringent on dual citizenship or scrapping the practice all together.

YLE on Thursday ran a report saying the minister may be looking into making the criteria for awarding dual citizenship stricter.

Räsänen told STT that neither she nor the government is considering changing the legislation related to the matter and that the issue has not even been discussed.

Räsänen said what YLE reported correctly was that she is examining the situation of dual citizenship.

According to her, the basis of the inquiry is to establish the number of people holding different nationalities in the country, the situation of different countries and how the system has worked.

Räsänen said the inquiry may lead to a deliberation on possible changes in the system.

According to YLE, the move follows a sharp increase in the number of Russian nationals awarded with Finnish citizenship which currently stands at about 20,000.

YLE also said that the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy chaired by President Sauli Niinistö has drawn attention to possible problems that may arise due to dual nationality.

The report also stated that the government had concerns over Russia with regard to monitoring of Russian nationals holding dual citizenship.
