Interior Minister and Suomen Kristillisdemokraatit (Christian Democrats of Finland) Chair Päivi Räsänen has explained her position of opposing equal marriage law based on the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In an interview with Radio Helsinki, Räsänen said the declaration defines marriage as a union that is only between a man and a woman.
Räsänen said the interpretation of the Universal Declaration of Human rights starts from the point that everyone has a right, that every man and woman have the right to marry, thus even there (Universal Declaration of Human Rights), marriage is defined as a union between a man and a woman.
The interviewer, Ville Blåfield, questioned Räsänen’s interpretation but the minister said she was fully convinced.
The interview conducted on Wednesday can be heard on the Radio Helsinki website.
