According to Annika Utrianen, an event producer at Maritime Centre Vellamo in Kotka, the pressure to increase visitors to the museums is tough.
This is because young people have become accustomed to different entertainment devices and want museums to make use of them.
Currently in the museum world, augmented reality is being used, for instance, through the aid of tablet’s camera, virtual characters and objects.
“Mobile guides have as well been on display in recent times. However, [you] have to always think for whom you are creating the service and for what reason,” said Utriainen, adding that a museum’s basic user in the country is a woman who is past the middle age.
Museums do not often have the latest technological knowhow to enable them to cooperate in projects with companies or institutions of higher education.
“The fundamental notion about the museum is that it is a little bit boring,” said Utriainen, pointing out that there is a desire to change this perception through different projects.
