Finnish authorities demanded an explanation from Russia on Friday over the incursion into Finnish airspace south of Porvoo, said Parliamentary Defence Committee Chairman Ilkka Kanerva on Saturday.

The committee chair also remarked that no airspace violation can be overlooked.

“Unless this violation is thoroughly explained, everyone will understand that the violations are increasing in frequency,” he said.

According to Kanerva, after two o’clock in the afternoon, Finnish airspace was breached for about a minute.

An Air Force Hornet identified and described the aircraft as a Russian Air Force IL-76 transport. According to the Defence Committee chairman, the Air Force reacted to the violation quickly and appropriately.

Kanerva said the incident’s occurrence may be the result of one of two things. “Either it is a technical navigation error or it is part of a dialogue with a neighbour expressing their existence,” he added.

The Border Guard will continue with their investigation into the violation.

Foreign Minister Timo Soini (True Finn) told STT on Saturday that the issue is being addressed with Russia through diplomatic channels.

Defence Minister Jussi Niinistö, however, did not make any comment on the airspace violation, as he was married over the weekend.
