According to a recent projection, several hundred thousands are forecast to move from rural areas in the next 15 years.
The study had asked 20 major cities for their population forecast for the year 2030.
Based on the projection, the population of the cities is set to grow by 400,000 in the next 15 years.
The rise in population in these cities is mainly attributed to internal migration; however, a part of the growth can be explained by immigration and birth rate.
According to migration researcher Timo Aro, urbanisation is inevitable. The number of people migrating from rural areas is even greater, if the population growth forecast of cities neighbouring the major cities is taken into account, Aro pointed out.
“Migration is selective, since almost four out five migrants are under the age of 35,” Aro said.
