The employees of mobile telephone company Nokia, in its Oulu office have been fearing closure of the unit as the company continues job cuts as the number of employees reduced to 500 from 2500 in the last five years.

“The total number of workers was 2,500 five years ago at this unit. The number reduced to 500 now,” said a senior staff at the unit Mikko Merihaara. He fears 500 more job cuts in the unit in near future.

Merihaara said that the unit might be closed down in future as the authority is reducing manpower every year.

“When the workforce is turning into smaller, there is no ground for existence of such a small unit,” said the official.

The Nokia authority in its interim report already said that the company  has undertaken a reform programme in the Mobile Phones units that produces basic phones.

The Nokia communication department said that the negotiations of  cutting job of 160 employees will start within few weeks.

Merihaara said that the reforms  would affect  Oulu seriously also some in Espoo.

“The reforms mean the basic phones will be made in China,” said Merihaara, a product development engineer, who is scheduled to leave Nokia in autumn.

“I failed to enjoy summer holidays in the last three years as everytime there was negations of job reduction between the employees and employer ,” said  Merihaara ,  who is now looking for a new job.
