Fri, 13 Sep, 2013 12:00:46 AM FTimes-Xinhua Report, September 13 Photo Lehtikuva The roaming charges for phone calls, messages and Internet access must be eliminated by 2015 in Europe, members of the European Parliament (MEPs) said on Thursday in a vote during its plenary session in Strasbourg, France.
Reacting to the Commission's legislative proposal on a single telecoms market, MEP Jens Rohde said, "We want to put an end to this fragmented market which is not fit for global competition."
Large price difference between using mobile phones at home and abroad, caused by "unbalanced profit margins on roaming," is one of the main reasons why a single telecoms market does not exist, MEPs said.
MEPs also suggested a series of measures to reduce barriers and improve access to Internet. Education and access to finance could help fill many job vacancies in this area, they said.
The Commission's proposal that includes customer charges reduction needs further examination by the Parliament and the EU Council. The next EU summit in late October is set to discuss the digital agenda.
