Swedish information technology (IT) companies are trying to cope with chronic staff deficits by hiring experts from Finland, where a wealth of skilled labour exists in the aftermath of Nokia.

“We are trying to find new ways to recruit,” said Johnny Fägersten, representative of the IT consulting company Sigma.

According to him, job advertisements in Finland always bring in a whole bunch of applications, whereas in Sweden that tactic no longer works.

Sigma and three other IT companies are travelling Tuesday to Microsoft’s job fair in Salo.

An estimated 12,000 Finnish IT professionals lost their jobs because of Nokia closure.

The phasing out of Microsoft’s research unit in the fall will bring an estimated 2,300 more unemployed IT workers.
