Although the refugees are coming to Finland amid a terrible economic situation, economists believe the situation could be improved through participation of the asylum seekers in the labour market.

Finnish Business and Policy Research Institute Research Director Markku Kotilainen believes the poor economic situation could be used effectively in integrating refugees, so that they would be willing to join the labour market and improve the economic situation.

According to him, integration and training are necessary so that when the economic downfall reverses course, there is an adequate supply of qualified workers.

Nordea Chief Economist Aki Kangasharju also viewed that refugees coming to Finland are of great benefit to the country.

In his opinion, the state should take on short-term debt to handle the immigration.

“It’s a good revival,” said Kangasharju.

He said the EU should decide not to include integration and migration costs in the EMU deficit and debt criteria. “These exceptions are made sometimes. For example, when the crisis packages were made, they were not included in the deficit criteria.”
