Research and development expenditure amounted to EUR 6.5 billion in 2014, marking a fall by EUR 170 million from the year before, according to Statistics Finland.
 
Business enterprises' investments in product development decreased by EUR 190 million or four per cent.
 
The drop was nearly EUR 90 million in the product group telecommunication equipment.
 
In the university sector, R&D expenditure grew by EUR 50 million (3.6 per cent) and in the research institutes and other public sector they declined by EUR 30 million (nearly five per cent), the data show.
 
The GDP share of R&D expenditure was 3.2 per cent in 2014.
 
The GDP share has decreased ever since 2009 when the share of R&D expenditure was 3.8 per cent.
 
The business sector's share of R&D expenditure has declined from 74 to 68 per cent in 2008 to 2014 as per the statistics.
 
In 2015, R&D expenditure is estimated to fall by EUR 45 million, putting its GPD share at no more than 3.1 per cent.
