Consumer Ombudsman Päivi Hentunen on Wednesday demanded explanation from the gas distributor Aurora Kaasunjakelu Oy about its price increases.

The ombudsman, the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, and the Energy Agency decided Wednesday that an explanation was necessary.

The company has been invited for negotiations scheduled for the end of next week. The ombudsman described the process as similar to the case of the electricity company Caruna.

“It is, in a sense, a similar case to electricity because the Energy Agency acts as monitors,” Hentunen told the news agency STT.

She stressed that products are only monitored in cases where there is no possibility of choice.

Due to customer notifications, Hentunen had already asked Aurora in December to explain price increases. “Now we want to go a little deeper into the matter, and we have asked for more detailed information,” she told STT.

Hentunen does not believe that the matter will be clarified in just one meeting.

Aurora CEO Mika Paloranta, on the other hand, maintains that electricity and gas distribution cannot be equated with each other, because gas is not an essential commodity like electricity.
