Millions of euros in renovations will be made to military buildings this year.

Implementation of the renovations falls on the owner of the buildings, state-owned enterprise Senaatti Properties, which leases the buildings to the Defence Forces.

“All in all, we will spend about 100 million euros on the renovations,” said the Vice President of Senaatti Properties, Jari Panhelainen.

“The conditions of the properties range from frail to very good.”

In Panhelainen's view, the barracks buildings are in the worst condition. In addition to buildings be renovated, some are being refit for new purposes.

“In Niinisalo, there were horse stables. These would not have been appropriate to house modern military trucks,” Panhelainen said.

Most of the buildings come from the 1960s or 1970s, though the oldest come from the early 1900s, said the Defence Forces logistics institute.

“We are planning periods of five to ten years, and the plans for the renovations take time,” said designer Heikki Savolainen.

“The need [for renovation] comes when the building reaches a certain stage in its life cycle, where certain measures must be taken,” Savolainen added.
