Competitiveness deal

Initiatives to reach to a negotiation on competitiveness agreement are still on, as about 10 per cent of the employees of Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) are working on the issue on Saturday.

The negotiation results should be ready by Tuesday.

Many areas of disagreement related to the way to organise the additional 24 hours of worktime have caused a logjam in the negotiations.

The trade union Pro still demands that Labour Minister Jari Lindström should withdraw the condition for weakening of unemployment of benefits, so that the association can be competitive according to the agreement.

The association sees as problematic the obligation to accept a job below one’s level of earnings-related unemployment benefits.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä said earlier that the government does not negotiate directly with trade unions.

However, Lindström will attend a Pro leadership meeting on Tuesday morning.

“The solution will arise on the basis of that discussion, whether the negotiated results are taken into discussion by the government or are left alone,” said Pro Chairman Jorma Malinen.

According to Malinen, negotiations are progressing at different rates at different tables, but the largest sticking point is the additional hours worked.

“For us, it is a matter of local negotiations (to extend working hours), not a right for management to dictate,” Malinen said.
