The total number of families with children in the country has reduced by 2,100 in 2012 from that in the previous year, according to a Statistics Finland report.

The report released last week said the total number of families with children stood at 578,000 at end-2012.

The number of families with at least four underage children, however, remained unchanged, although the share of persons who belong to a family has been falling steadily.

The statistics show the number of families with at least four children had grown by around 100 in 2012 from one year ago.

They show the number of families with two and three children has been on the wane while the number of families with one child has remained almost unchanged.

Thirteen per cent of the families with underage children have three children and 5 per cent have at least four under-18 children.

In relative terms, the number of families with at least four children is highest in North and Central Ostrobothnia. Their number is lowest in relative terms in Åland, Uusimaa, South Karelia and Varsinais-Suomi.

At end-2012, the total number of families was 1,466,000. The number had grown by 5,200 from the previous yearend.

The growth was slightly lower than that of 5,500 in the previous year.

Altogether, 75 per cent of the Finnish population, or 4,075,000 people, belonged to a family. The share of persons who belong to a family has been falling steadily. As late as in 1990, their share of the population was 82 per cent. Two-thirds of the families were of married couples.

Twenty-two per cent were families of cohabiting couples and 12 per cent were one-parent families. There were also slightly less than 2,000 families of registered same-sex couples.
