The Talvivaara, a base metal producer with primary focus on nickel and zinc, however, claimed it managed stoppage of the water flow immediately after the river water turned brownish yellow.
The head of communications of Talvivaara, Olli-Pekka Nissinen said that the water mixed with iron did not fall much in the waters.
The company discharged the water through drainage as a part of its cleaning operation, said the Talvivaara official.
The Finnish Environment Institute SYKE, in a report late last year, said that waters around Talvivaara contain harmful substance.
In addition to nickel, the heavily increased cadmium, aluminium and uranium levels which have multiplied since the previous sampling, pose a threat.
The newly measured levels are poisonous to organisms, and the high level of aluminium may cause local fishes to kill, added the SYKE report.
Media reports say that the water of the river was discoloured till several kilometres to the South.
The company, however, claimed that discharge of water was stopped immediately after detecting the problem as the water colour was normal till Tuesday morning.
