Fire destroys under-construction building at Kannonkoski
FTimes-STT Report, January 6

A man was burnt to death in a fire that broke out in an apartment building in Kiuruvesi Sunday afternoon. The victim was 60 years old.

The ignited in an one-bedroom apartment on the first floor of the three-storied building in the Asematie Street.

Kyösti Mähönen, a fire fighter from the Northern Savonia rescue and emergency department, said that the fire appeared to have started from a bed.

“The fire alarm in the apartment started to right, and a passer-by broke in and tried to resuscitate the victim,” said Mähönen, adding that the rescue team also tried to revive the man but to no avail.

The man had been alone in the apartment and the fire did not pose any danger to the other dwellers of the building. Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

In another incident, an under-construction building was destroyed in fire in Kannonkoski in Central Finland on Sunday.

The 1,000 square meter building that was to become a nursing home for mental health patients was set to be completed in February.

The fire alarm rang around 5am and by the time the emergency and rescue service arrived, flames had spread to the roof extension of the building.

The fire fighters were still at the scene at 3:30pm and the floor structure of the building had to be demolished as part of the fire extinguishing procedure.

There was, however, no injury and the fire did not affect other buildings. The cause of the fire has not been established and police investigation is underway.
