International Development minister Pekka Haavisto is scheduled to reach Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, on a two-day visit on Thursday, said a government press release.

During his visit, the minister would get acquainted with the humanitarian situation of Eritrea and the problems caused by the present state of Eritrea, the refugee problem in particular.

At the same time Finland would encourage Eritrea to increase its international interaction and enhance its dialogue with the EU, the press release added.

Minister Haavisto will meet Eritrea’s President Isaias Afeverki and Foreign Affairs Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed as well as representatives of the international community, such as the UN and the EU, operating in the country.

Finland participates in the efforts to enhance the humanitarian situation of Eritrea chiefly through general assistance for the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR and the humanitarian aid donated to the Horn of Africa region, according to the press release.
