United Nations Population Fund, the UNFPA’s executive director Babatunde Osotimehin is scheduled to arrive in Helsinki tomorrow (Thursday), the day when the UN annual International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting will be observed.
 
The UNFPA is doing important work to end female genital mutilation/cutting.
 
The United Nations Population Fund is a long-term partner of Finland. Finland is among the organization's biggest supporters, both financially and politically. Finland's general funding in 2013 totalled 35.55 million euros. 
 
Through the UNFPA, Finland promotes sexual and reproductive health and rights as well as other development goals including the reduction of maternal mortality, sexual and reproductive health services, and gender equality for all. UNFPA's activities focus on the poorest countries and on women and young people.
 
During his visit, Osotimehin will meet Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, Minister for International Development Pekka Haavisto and the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs.
 
Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin has been the Executive Director of UNFPA since the beginning of 2011. By profession he is a physician and public health expert. Before this appointment, Dr. Osotimehin was Nigeria's Minister for Health.
