The government is going to make amendments to the Prison Act allowing limited internet access for prisoners.

Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson said the amended law will give prisoners the opportunity to use email and internet on reasonable grounds.

The use of the services, according to Henriksson, would necessitate that it does not pose any risk to the prison or its security.

The law, however, will not allow the use of social media.

The minister said the legal reforms will provide for stricter rules, such as in the use of prison uniforms. Prisoners are required to wear uniform overalls if there is a reason to suspect that they are involved in drug smuggling into the prison.
