The opposition Souomen Keskusta (Centre Party), Vasemmistoliito (Left Alliance) and Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) on Wednesday tabled an interpellation to address the deteriorating unemployment situation in the country.
Tens of millions of euros reserved for employment remain unused every year, complained opposition leaders at a press conference after submitting the interpellation. They demand more active government efforts to tackle unemployment.
Markus Mustajärvi of the Vasemmistoliitto said 95 million euros remained unutilised in 2012.
It is the parliament’s obligation to ensure that the funds are spent on employment and training, he told the opposition-held press conference.
According to Mustajärvi, in four years 270 million euros of the funds has been saved.
The opposition parties claimed tens of thousands of people would be left unemployed due to a lack of unemployment measures.
But, Tuija Oivo, Director-General at the Ministry of Employment and the Economy denied that unemployment resources remained unused.
According to her, the forecasted usage of the funds does not always match the calendar year and that is why the use of the money gets the wrong impression.
According to recent data of the labour authorities, nearly 130,000 people used the service at the end of March and the figure is 22,000 higher than the previous year.
This is the 17th interpellation tabled during the tenure of the present government.
Earlier, the Keskusta decided to submit an interpellation when the leaders held the prime minister’s party, Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party), as ultimately responsible for what they termed a failed economic and employment policy.
They also berated the Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party) for unfulfilled promises regarding creation of jobs and reminded that before elections social democrats had promised creation of 100,000 new jobs.
A Statistics Finland report released recently shows that the unemployment rate in March stood at 9.5 per cent with the number of unemployed standing at 252,000 or 16,000 more than that in March 2013.
