Tue, 22 Jul, 2014 12:05:19 AM FTimes-STT Report, July 22 Algae near the coast in Baltic Sea, Finland. Photo – Lehtikuva. The Finnish Border Guard pilots have spotted blue-green algae off the Finnish coast.
Spreads of blue-green algae have been sighted in western Gulf of Finland, southern part of the Archipelago Sea and north-eastern part of the Baltic Sea main basin.
According to the pilots, in some places the blue-green algae spread spans several kilometres both in length and width.
The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) confirmed the blue-green algae occurrence to be the biggest in a decade.

The weather expected this week might increase the algae spread.
Although the wind is expected to blow from the east and the north, it is possible that the algae could be washed off to the coast.
Blue-green algae can be toxic and cause allergic reactions. Those using boats and forms of transportation in the areas are advised not to use sea water.
