Tampere’s Sarkanniemi Dolphinarium has been allowed to continue with its operations as before, confirmed the local Regional State Administrative Agency.

During the summer, the Western and Inland Finland Regional State Administrative Agency was asked to clarify whether the dolphinarium should operate as a zoo or its operations should be evaluated as a circus.

The agency has maintained that the dolphinarium can continue to operate as a zoo, despite the fact that its operations depict some elements characteristic of a circus.

According to the agency, the mere fact that the animals perform to the public does not make the dolphinarium a circus.

Thus, the dolphinarium can continue to operate on its current zoo permit.

Hanna Kukkola, the regional veterinary doctor, welcomed the move saying that a zoo permit would require more from the dolphinarium than a circus permit. According to Kukkola, the zoo permit promotes wildlife conservation and preservation of biodiversity.
