Photo Lehtikuva As many as five or six people among those who left the country to join the fighting in Syria may have been killed, reported the Finnish language newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.No authority, however, confirmed the figure of casualty.
“There is no authority which is in a position to confirm this information,” said Tuomas Portaankorva, superintendent of the Finnish intelligence service-Supo.
The number of those from the country who have been wounded in the conflict is not known. According to the Helsinki Sanomat, the authorities believe 43 men or women so far have left the country to join the fighting in Syria.
However, the newspaper claims that the actual figure may exceed 50.
In June, the Helsingin Sanomat reported that three Finnish citizens had died in the Syrian fighting.
Earlier, referring to a report on the death of at least two Finnish citizens in the fighting, Supo sources said individuals from different ethnic groups including Finnish converts to Islam have travelled to Syria from Finland.
