The country lacks the know-how in the rehabilitation of the elderly, said Elli Aaltonen, the Chair of Central Union for the Welfare.

“We know how to care the elderly, but we do not know how to rehabilitate them,” Aaltonen said at an event to mark the Day of the Elderly in Mikkeli.

According to Aaltonen, rehabilitation is a tool which is instrumental in ensuring success in home care services, elderly living in homes and in sheltered homes.

Susanna Huovinen, the Minister of Health and Social Services also commented on the situation of elderly during the event. According to the minister, the elderly should be included in the planning of the services.

Pointing at different forms of elderly housing and care services, the minister said that the ministry supports the development of municipalities’ different intermediate elderly services.
