FTimes - Xinhua Report, Oct. 28

A civil servant tried to sell secret police information to media, Finnish commercial broadcaster MTV disclosed on Monday.

A person tried to sell information about ongoing police terrorism investigations to MTV's news editors, said MTV, the one had earlier voluntarily provided to the media with sensitive information, which later proved to be accurate.

For this reason, MTV believed that the person is a civil servant, who has the right to access to police secret data.

MTV rejected the offer the person gave, and handed over the case to the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

Tero Haapala, Detective Chief Inspector at NBI, told MTV that the case will be taken seriously. NBI and the National Police Board will decide the nature of the investigation.

"In any such cases where an official is alleged to have committed a serious crime, there are things that should be investigated," Haapala was cited as saying.

According to Haapala, this is not an isolated case. Allegations relating to leaking secret official information have been made from time to time. Each case is treated as a serious matter, he claimed.
