The investigation surrounding Jari Aarnio, former head of Helsinki drug unit police, has now extended to the Kuopio police, confirmed lead investigator in the case Jukka Haavisto.

Haavisto said the matter is about a serious drug offence which had been left without investigation and also a matter of who should have been investigated.

According to the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat, two more police officers from Kuopio are suspected of breach of duty.

The investigation has led to suspicions that Aarnio’s motive would have been to cover his own tracks, since, at the moment, he is suspected of a number of drug offences.

Aarnio maintains his innocence and denies all the charges.

Haavisto said it is possible that investigation in Kuopio would have led to investigation in the drug case and Aarnio as well.

Haavisto said that link to the case was not known in Kuopio, but the Helsinki Police department had been contacted for other reasons.

Haavisto added that the other suspects had not been aware of Aarnio’s involvement in the cases. All the other suspects deny the charges.

Aarnio is in custody since November last year.
