Thin ice causes several rescue situations
FTimes-Xinhua-STT Report, April 7

Two men died after the snowmobiles they were driving fell through thin ice in the Gulf of Bothnia on Sunday, local media reported on Monday.

The two men, respectively aged 46 and 69, left from Oulu city in northern Finland on Sunday morning. They were expected to cross the sea surface and arrive at Hailuoto island by 7 p.m. local time. Rescuers received an emergency call after the duo failed to show up at the island.

A rescue unit went to the scene and found that the snowmobiles had fallen into the sea.

The two men were salvaged from the icy waters and transported by helicopter to hospital. They died later in the hospital.

Due to the rising temperature, the ice covering the sea off Finland's coast is getting thinner dramatically in recent days. On Sunday, the West Finland Coast Guard issued a warning for very thin ice in the region.

Meanwhile, Falls through thin ice caused several rescue situations over the Easter holiday in different parts of Finland. Several rescue workers warned of thin ice during the holiday, reported STT.

Rescue operations due to thin ice were in abundance in the Oulu region. Especially the Bothnian Bay and Kvarken are showing less ice than usual for this time of year, and what is there is thin and weakening.

In addition, one person in Pyhäselkä, in North Karjala, was hospitalized after falling through the ice on Sunday. The man had been ice fishing when he fell into a hole in the ice. He managed to pull himself out of the water, though. He was still being treated in the hospital on Monday, but he was not seriously injured. Equipment left by the man on the ice resulted in a small-scale search for a few hours on Monday.
